Please note that in your search for information on human use of other animals you will frequently find the words vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based diet used interchangeably.  It is the opinion of this organisation (Eden) that these words are not interchangeable.  The word vegan refers not simply to a 100% plant based way of eating, but to a way of life that avoids all forms of exploitation of other animals.
